Brandin 794-2 'L.P.' HB; 7'9" 2 pc/2 tips
Brandin 794-2 'L.P.' HB; 7'9" 2 pc/2 tips hexagonal semi-hollow rod for #4 line at 3 oz. I built a few of these some years ago and very much appreciated their comfortable, easy manner when fishing small to medium sized streams and hence decided to build this rod. This model is inspired by a 7'9" Leonard Parabolic made in the 1930's and owned by my old friend Art Warner. The Leonard company made several versions of this model before the fire, but in my mind these earliest examples are by far the best and I used Art's rod as the foundation for my own updated and hollowbuilt version of this classic taper. I have had two other Leonard Parabolics come through my hands, both later rods and nowhere near as good as the earlier rod. The later rods had tags which read "7 3/4 ft." but when measured were actually 7'11" and these rods were much softer, actually better with a #3 line. This rod has lighter colored cane oven tempered only, and an eastern cedar reel-seat insert echoing Leonard's use of this wood in their old 'Catskill' rods. Hardware is left bright also in a nod to the Leonard aesthetic. Stripping guide is a low-bridge German make from Hoagy Carmichael complemented with black nickel snake guides held in place with distinctive tipped silk windings. I am very taken with the American parabolic rods produced starting in the 1930's by Leonard, Payne and even F.E. Thomas, probably inspired by the writing of John Alden Knight. I will soon have a chance to examine a Payne Parabolic also at 7'9" and am curious to compare its taper to the original Leonard described above. When I can find the time, I will make more of this model and plan to keep one for myself. This rod is new and comes in original bag with provision for a ferrule plug, labeled tube and outer tube bag.
