H.L. Leonard 4099½ SDF light salmon rod; 8½ ft 3pc/2 tips, 6 oz
H.L. Leonard 4099½ SDF light salmon rod; 8½ ft 3pc/2 tips, 6 oz with provision for detachable fighting butt. My 1950's Wm. Mills catalogs state that the 4099½ is more powerful than the 50½ DF, but I don't see it offered set up as a salmon rod so this may have been a special request from a customer. It is a great feeling rod that I believe I would fish a #7 line on and it is dead straight. Guides are chrome so that may also have been a special request and the excellent condition finish and wraps look to me to be original. Ferrule fits are excellent and cork shows no ridging. Square-thread down-locking reel-seat is mounted with a butternut spacer. Fits of detachable fighting butt and butt plug are excellent and fighting butt is housed in a separate bag connected to the main rod bag by cotton twill tape, a very nice and practical configuration. This extra bag sits on top of the rod in its bag and there is room for both within the tube, a nice solution to an always vexing problem of how to house the fighting butt. This is a very attractive rod and one I would absolutely happily fish myself on our trips to Newfoundland for grilse and smaller salmon or in British Columbia and California for steelhead. In original bag with tag and Leonard tube. From the Thomas H. Clark collection. SOLD
