E.C. Powell 9 ft. 3pc/2 tips 'Yerxa Dry Fly Rod' 4¾ oz

SKU:

E.C. Powell 9 ft. 3pc/2 tips 'Yerxa Dry Fly Rod' 4¾ oz. Original E.C. Powell rods are so nice to fish with it is rare to find one in this condition, even more so in this unusual model. In his early version of the pamphlet A Short Common Sense Treatise on Fly Rod Construction E.C. describes how the Yerxa variation on his 'A' taper rods came about: "The 'A' type rods, except in its mildest form, is not liked by some 'Dry Fly' anglers, for actual stream fishing on account of its being too fast in its action for drying the fly by false casting. To meet a certain demand for a 'Dry Fly' rod that will go into action easily, for false casting, and still have power enough to make as long a cast as is necessary, I have designed a combination of the type 'A' and type 'B' rods that I call the 'Yerxa Dry Fly Rod.' This rod has been pronounced by the most expert dry fly angler that I know, as the perfect 'Dry Fly' action, and this angler has been searching for such an action for twenty years without success until I designed this rod." I am confident that the angler E.C. talks about here is Wood Yerxa who introduced E.C. to the dry fly and also was very much involved in the development of the revolutionary Powell saw used to cut tapered bamboo strips. There is a photograph of Wood Yerxa watching E.C. cast on page 95 of my book about E.C. Powell A Fly Rod With a Soul and the rod for sale here is pictured on the first page of chapter 9 on page 85 of the book. I like this rod with a #6 line, good for trout fishing on medium to larger rivers. Agate stripping guide and dark tungsten steel snakes under standard 'desert gold' original wraps. Rod is straight as a pin and looks to be unused, showing little to no soiling to the cork grip as well as no ridging to the cork. Wraps between the grip and stripping guide are the often seen pattern on three piece A taper rods of 'narrow / wide / narrow / wide.' In original green bag with tag and Powell tube including shipping label matching the name on the tag. From my personal collection. SOLD
