Jim Payne model 101, 7½ ft. 2pc/2 tips, 3½ oz
Jim Payne model 101, 7½ ft. 2pc/2 tips, 3½ oz. I am always taken with these older Paynes that have clearly seen use but remain straight as a pin. It is a testament both to the bamboo quality and workmanship of the maker. Finish is original and without any issues requiring attention. Many have tried, but the finish produced by Jim Payne has in my opinion never been matched. Most of the blueing is retained on both the ferrules and the reel-seat hardware while the cork grip shows some ridging and roughness from age. I like this rod best with a #5 line and I would not disagree with the description of its action as 'fast dry fly' in the 1950's Payne catalog. The butt cap is stamped only 'Payne / Reg. U.S. Pat. Off.' in the typical cartouche, so rod did not come through a dealer and is proper without ferrule plugs. I judge this rod to be from the mid to late 1940's. It does have the original tag which lists weight as 3⅝-3¾ oz, but does not give the model number. In original bag and tube with partial blue care label.
