Leon Hanson ‘Hanson Hollow’ 8½ ft. 3pc/2 tips, 3.20 oz for #4 line. This rod remains in the same condition as when it left Leon’s shop outside Detroit. Leon has been making rods since the 1970’s and is included in Ernie Schwiebert’s book Trout as a significant builder even then. I was introduced to Leon through my friend Tom Clark and have spent many hours and days discussing rods and building techniques with him as well as sharing time on various waters. He is a remarkable angler and rod maker who has always had that subtle, innate ability to understand rod action. I was impressed with his solid rods and in discussions at Tom Clark’s place in Belgrade, MT I introduced him to the concept of the semi-hollow bamboo rod. Leon has adopted the progressive semi-hollow concept and combined it with his distinctive approach to tapers and an evolved use of components to develop what I feel are some of the most remarkable rods ever built. This is a three-piece rod with a smooth, easy action, wonderful to cast and fish. It is not as radically racy as his two-piece designs; the extra top ferrule slowing the action just a touch as it does on my own three-piece, semi-hollow rods. The rod is very comfortable in every way and of course easier to transport. The feet on the Recoil guides are ground to minimize weight from wraps and finish and Recoil single foot guides are used as tip tops to maximize rod dampening. Ferrules are micro-Swiss as developed by Bailey Wood in the 1990’s, the same ones I use on my hexagonal semi-hollow rods. These ‘Hanson Hollow’ rods are very much in demand so if looking for a longer rod with positive action for a number four line, don’t hesitate. In original bag and tube with rod information etched into the screw cap as is Leon’s tradition
