F.E. Thomas Browntone 13½ ft salmon rod, 20⅞ oz, 3pc/2 tips
F.E. Thomas Browntone 13½ ft salmon rod, 20⅞ oz, 3pc/2 tips. I have felt for many years that two hand salmon rods show off the work of a given classic maker much better than smaller trout rods. As a maker myself, and having built a number of two hand rods, I know how much more work the bigger sticks are. This is an exquisitely beautiful example from one of my favorite classic builders completed in 1944; truly a glimpse into a different time in our fly fishing history. With the exception of a few places where the varnish has bag marks, this rod remains in excellent, very lightly (if ever) used condition. It has the lovely large agate stripping guide accompanied by reverse twist 'English' snakes and supported tips tops. All guides are double wrapped at the inside. Action is typical fast Thomas and very powerful, suitable for the style of two hand casting I was taught by Simon Gawesworth which likes a faster, progressive action, or of course for overhead casting as was the norm in this country's golden age of salmon angling with bamboo. It is lovely to see the typical dramatically fast taper in the last six inches of the tip, so distinctively F.E. Thomas. In original canvas sack with tip tube, inner tip bag, and original tag. From my personal collection.
