Jim Payne model 204 8½ ft. 3pc/2 tips 4¾ oz
Jim Payne model 204 8½ ft. 3pc/2 tips 4¾ oz. The Payne 204 is a great choice for slightly larger trout waters where a #5 line is desired and this is a wonderful example. It is dead straight with perfect ferrule fits. The regular 204 is often a #4/5 line rod, while I actually judge this to be a 204-H as listed in my older, green cover Payne catalog as from 4½-4⅞ oz in weight. My 'waggle-test' and my deflection board both put this rod as a true #5 line rod. Tips measure .068" over varnish just below the tip top. It is stamped 'Sold by Abercrombie & Fitch, New York" and "Payne / Reg. U.S. Pat. Off" on the tapered butt cap. It has the expected 'Perfection' stripping guide and reverse-twist 'English' snake guides. I thought for a time that this rod was in completely original condition, but judging by the thicker than expected coat of varnish over the femaile ferrules, this rod has had an overcoat of protective varnish over original wraps and finish. It has a particularly steely feel and will make a wonderful general purpose trout rod for waters such as the Big Beaverkill, West Branch Delaware, Missouri and similar waters. In original bag and Payne tube.
